PIK Scalper Pro — The Complete User Guide
An automated, rule-based scalping strategy with built-in bracket orders, breakeven and trailing stops, daily risk limits and a full diagnostic log — so you always know what it is doing and why.
VERSION 2.4 NINJATRADER 8 MANAGED ORDERS FUTURES
This guide walks you through everything: how PIK Scalper Pro decides when to trade, how it manages a position once it is in one, every setting in the properties window, the on-chart status panel, the risk controls that protect your account, how to backtest it honestly, and how to read the diagnostic log when something doesn’t look right.
⚠Read this first
PIK Scalper Pro is an automated strategy: when Enable Trades is on, it submits real orders to whatever account you select. Always start on a simulation account (e.g. Sim101), confirm the behaviour matches what you expect, and supervise it whenever it runs on a live or funded account. Trading futures involves substantial risk of loss.
01What PIK Scalper Pro Is
PIK Scalper Pro is a NinjaTrader 8 strategy that looks for short-term reversal structure on your chart, enters with a market order when that structure confirms, and immediately protects the position with a stop-loss and profit target. Everything it does is governed by the rules and limits you set in the properties window.
Automated entries
Detects a confirmed short-term swing on bar close and enters long or short — one position at a time.
Protected from the first tick
Stop-loss and profit target are attached to every entry automatically (NinjaTrader managed bracket orders).
Trade management
Optional breakeven stop and bar-close trailing stop that only ever move in your favour.
Daily risk limits
Daily profit target, daily loss limit, max trades per day, max consecutive losses and a trading-hours window.
Signals-only mode
Run it with Enable Trades off to see arrows and signals without placing a single order.
Full transparency
An on-chart status card tells you if it is ACTIVE, PAUSED or LOCKED — and why. Debug Mode logs every decision.
ℹWhat it is not
It is not a signal service, not investment advice, and not a set-and-forget money machine. It applies the same pre-set rules for every user, regardless of your account, goals or risk tolerance. You choose the instrument, size and limits — and every order it places is your order.
02How It Finds Trades
PIK Scalper Pro evaluates the market once per completed bar (Calculate = On bar close). It never acts on a half-formed bar, which keeps live behaviour consistent with what you see on the chart afterwards.
1
A swing forms — the strategy notices a short-term swing extreme — a local high when it is hunting shorts, a local low when it is hunting longs — and arms a setup.
2
It waits for confirmation — the setup stays armed until price closes decisively through the confirmation level in the opposite direction. If price instead makes a new extreme beyond the swing, the setup is cancelled and the hunt starts again.
3
Signal & entry — on the confirming bar close an arrow is drawn, the bar background is tinted, and — if Enable Trades is on and all risk gates are open — a market order is sent with its stop and target attached.
4
Direction flips — by default (Alternate Directions = on) a short signal switches the strategy to hunting longs next, and vice-versa. Turn it off to hunt both directions on every bar.
★Two filters you control
Require True Pivot demands that the swing be a genuine local extreme rather than just a lower high / higher low — fewer, cleaner setups. Max Setup Bars discards an armed setup that hasn’t confirmed within N bars, so stale structure from long ago can’t trigger a trade. Both are off by default to preserve the original behaviour — test them before changing your live settings.
Before it trades at all, the strategy needs two full sessions of chart history plus the minimum bar count (20 bars). During that time the status card shows WARMUP. Load at least 3–5 days of data on your chart so warmup is complete before the live session.
03What Happens After Entry
| Stage |
What the strategy does |
| Bracket attached |
A stop-loss (Stop Ticks, default 21) and profit target (Target Ticks, default 70) are submitted with the entry. You are never in a position without a stop. |
| Breakeven (optional) |
Once a bar closes at least Breakeven Trigger ticks in profit, the stop moves to entry ± Breakeven Offset. Fires once per trade. |
| Trailing stop (optional) |
After the optional trigger distance, the stop trails Trail Distance ticks behind each bar close — only when it improves by at least Min Trail Improvement ticks, and never backwards. |
| Through-market guard |
A stop move that would land on the wrong side of the current bid/ask is held back and retried next bar, instead of being rejected by the broker. |
| Daily stop flatten |
If Flatten On Daily Stop is on and today’s realised + open P&L breaches your Daily Stop PnL, the position is closed at market. |
| Exit on session close |
NinjaTrader’s built-in session-close exit flattens any open position 30 seconds before the session ends. |
ℹBar close, not tick-by-tick
Breakeven, trailing and the daily-stop check are evaluated when each bar closes. Your stop and target orders themselves sit at the exchange/broker and fill intrabar as normal.
04Instant Download & Install
Your download is available the moment your order clears — from your confirmation email and account. Installing into NinjaTrader 8 takes under a minute:
1
Download — the PIK Scalper Pro file from your confirmation email or account.
2
Import — in NinjaTrader, open the Control Center → Tools → Import → NinjaScript Add-On…
3
Select the file — and let NinjaTrader import it. Restart NinjaTrader if prompted.
4
Add it to a chart — open a chart, right-click → Strategies, find PIKSCALPERPRO (in the PIKSTRATEGIES folder), add it and configure it as described below.
★Updating to a new version
Disable and remove the strategy from your charts before importing an update, then add it again afterwards. The version number on the on-chart card (e.g. Version 2.4) confirms which build is running.
05Activating Your License (Machine ID)
PIK strategies are licensed to your machine. Activation is a quick, one-time step:
1
Find your Machine ID — in NinjaTrader (Control Center → Help → About, or as shown on the activation page).
2
Submit it — through our activation form using the link below.
3
Done — once processed, the strategy is fully unlocked on that machine.
06Accepting the License Agreement
The first time you enable PIK Scalper Pro on a computer, the PriceIsKing.com End User License Agreement (including Schedule A — Financial Risk Disclosure and Trading Liability Schedule) opens in its own window. Until it is accepted, the strategy is LOCKED: it will not generate signals, draw arrows or place orders.
1
Read the Agreement — scroll all the way to the end — the acceptance box stays disabled until you do.
2
Tick the box — “I have read and understand this End User License Agreement, including Schedule A, and I agree to be bound by its terms.”
3
Press Accept & Continue — the strategy unlocks immediately. Pressing Decline (or closing the window) keeps it locked.
4
Tick the setting — in the properties window, under 00. License Agreement, tick Read & Accept Terms & Conditions (EULA) so the Agreement isn’t shown again on this computer. The Status line beneath it shows when it was accepted.
ℹWhere acceptance is recorded
A small acceptance record (date/time, Windows user, computer name and an Agreement fingerprint) is saved to Documents\NinjaTrader 8\PriceIsKing\Licenses\. If the Agreement is ever updated, you will be asked to review and accept the new version.
07Your First Run — Safe Setup Checklist
1
Use a simulation account — select Sim101 (or your broker’s demo account) in the strategy’s Account setting.
2
Load enough history — at least 3–5 days on the chart so the two-session warmup completes.
3
Start in Signals Only — leave Enable Trades off first. Watch the arrows for a session and make sure the signals match the chart type and instrument you trade. The card shows SIGNALS ONLY.
4
Set your risk limits — Daily Stop PnL, Daily Target PnL, Max Daily Trades and Max Consecutive Losses — sized for your account (see
Matching Risk to Your Instrument).
5
Turn on Enable Trades — on the sim account, confirm the card reads ACTIVE, and watch the first trades — entries, stops, targets, breakeven and trailing moves.
6
Only then go live — when you fully understand the behaviour, switch the Account to your live or funded account and keep supervising it.
⚠Settings are locked while the strategy runs
NinjaTrader greys out the properties of an enabled strategy. To change any setting: disable the strategy, edit, then enable it again.
08The On-Chart Panel & Status Badges
PIK Scalper Pro draws a compact white header card in the upper-left corner of the chart showing the strategy name, its live status, the reason (when it is not trading) and the version. A P&L box sits in the lower-left.
PIK SCALPER PRO
Status: PAUSED
Max consecutive losses 3/3
Version 2.4
Example header card while trading is paused.
| Status |
What it means |
What to do |
| ACTIVE |
All gates are open. New signals will be traded. |
Nothing — supervise as normal. |
| PAUSED |
A risk gate is blocking new entries. The red line underneath says which one (daily target/stop hit, max trades, max losses, or outside the time window). Open positions are still fully managed. |
Usually nothing — it resets at the next session. Review the reason and your limits. |
| WARMUP |
The strategy is still collecting its two sessions / minimum bars of history. |
Load more history, or wait for the next session. |
| SIGNALS ONLY |
Enable Trades is off. Signals and arrows only; no orders are sent. |
Turn on Enable Trades when you are ready (sim first). |
| LOCKED |
The License Agreement has not been accepted (or was declined). |
Disable and re-enable the strategy to open the Agreement again, then accept. |
The P&L box
| Line |
Meaning |
| Strategy Day |
This strategy’s realised P&L for the current session — the figure the daily target / stop limits use. |
| UnRealized |
Open P&L of the current position on this instrument (currency, percent, points, ticks or pips — set by PnL Display Unit). |
| Realized (acct) |
The account’s realised P&L as reported by your connection (all strategies and manual trades combined). |
| Account Cash |
Cash value reported by your account connection. |
When a daily P&L limit is reached, a red ⛔ PnL Limit Reached banner also appears in the top-right of the chart. It clears automatically when the limit resets at the next session.

10Risk Controls Explained
Risk gates are checked on every bar. A tripped gate only blocks new entries — any open position keeps its stop, target, breakeven and trailing management. The card shows PAUSED with the exact reason.
| Gate |
Trips when |
Resets |
| Daily Target PnL |
Strategy session P&L ≥ target |
Next session |
| Daily Stop PnL |
Strategy session P&L ≤ −stop (and, with Flatten On Daily Stop, open trades are closed) |
Next session |
| Max Daily Trades |
Entry fills this session ≥ limit |
Next session |
| Max Consecutive Losses |
Losing trades in a row ≥ limit |
Next session, or after a winning trade |
| Time Filter |
Bar time is outside the window (only when Use Time Filter is on) |
When the window opens |
ℹFresh limits every time you start it live
When you enable the strategy, NinjaTrader first replays recent history. Trades taken during that replay are simulated and never reach your account — so the moment the strategy goes live, daily trades, consecutive losses and session P&L are reset to zero. A mid-day restart will not start you PAUSED because of trades that never happened.
⚠A limit of 0 means OFF
Setting Daily Target PnL or Daily Stop PnL to 0 disables that limit. It does not mean “stop at breakeven”.
11Matching Risk to Your Instrument
Stop and target settings are in ticks, so the dollar risk per trade depends entirely on the instrument. With the default 21-tick stop and 1 contract (before slippage and commission):
| Instrument |
Tick value |
21-tick stop |
70-tick target |
Losses to hit a $500 Daily Stop |
| ES (E-mini S&P 500) |
$12.50 |
$262.50 |
$875.00 |
2 |
| NQ (E-mini Nasdaq-100) |
$5.00 |
$105.00 |
$350.00 |
5 |
| MES (Micro S&P 500) |
$1.25 |
$26.25 |
$87.50 |
20 |
| MNQ (Micro Nasdaq-100) |
$0.50 |
$10.50 |
$35.00 |
48 |
★Size the limits to the contract
A $500 daily stop is two losing ES trades but almost fifty losing MNQ trades. Set Daily Stop PnL, Max Daily Trades and Max Consecutive Losses together so they make sense for the contract and size you actually trade — and for any prop-firm drawdown rules you are bound by.
12Backtesting It Honestly
1
Open the Strategy Analyzer — Control Center → New → Strategy Analyzer, and choose PIKSCALPERPRO.
2
Use realistic fills — keep Order Fill Resolution on High (1 tick) with tick data downloaded, and at least 1 tick of slippage.
3
Include commission — enable commission so results reflect your real costs.
4
Accept the Agreement first — if the Agreement hasn’t been accepted on this computer, the strategy is locked and the backtest will show zero trades.
5
Test out-of-sample — optimise on one period, then validate on a different period you didn’t optimise on.
⚠Renko, tick and other non-time-based charts
Backtests and Market Replay on Renko and other non-time-based bar types can fill very differently from live markets. Treat their results with extra caution and confirm behaviour on a simulation account in real time.
HYPOTHETICAL PERFORMANCE DISCLAIMER: HYPOTHETICAL PERFORMANCE RESULTS HAVE MANY INHERENT LIMITATIONS, SOME OF WHICH ARE DESCRIBED BELOW. NO REPRESENTATION IS BEING MADE THAT ANY ACCOUNT WILL OR IS LIKELY TO ACHIEVE PROFITS OR LOSSES SIMILAR TO THOSE SHOWN; IN FACT, THERE ARE FREQUENTLY SHARP DIFFERENCES BETWEEN HYPOTHETICAL PERFORMANCE RESULTS AND THE ACTUAL RESULTS SUBSEQUENTLY ACHIEVED BY ANY PARTICULAR TRADING PROGRAM. ONE OF THE LIMITATIONS OF HYPOTHETICAL PERFORMANCE RESULTS IS THAT THEY ARE GENERALLY PREPARED WITH THE BENEFIT OF HINDSIGHT. IN ADDITION, HYPOTHETICAL TRADING DOES NOT INVOLVE FINANCIAL RISK, AND NO HYPOTHETICAL TRADING RECORD CAN COMPLETELY ACCOUNT FOR THE IMPACT OF FINANCIAL RISK OF ACTUAL TRADING. FOR EXAMPLE, THE ABILITY TO WITHSTAND LOSSES OR TO ADHERE TO A PARTICULAR TRADING PROGRAM IN SPITE OF TRADING LOSSES ARE MATERIAL POINTS WHICH CAN ALSO ADVERSELY AFFECT ACTUAL TRADING RESULTS. THERE ARE NUMEROUS OTHER FACTORS RELATED TO THE MARKETS IN GENERAL OR TO THE IMPLEMENTATION OF ANY SPECIFIC TRADING PROGRAM WHICH CANNOT BE FULLY ACCOUNTED FOR IN THE PREPARATION OF HYPOTHETICAL PERFORMANCE RESULTS AND ALL WHICH CAN ADVERSELY AFFECT TRADING RESULTS.
13Debug Mode & the Output Log
When something doesn’t look right, Debug Mode shows you exactly what the strategy saw and decided, bar by bar.
1
Disable the strategy — then tick 07. Debug → Debug Mode and enable it again.
2
Open the Output window — Control Center → New → NinjaScript Output. (Strategy messages do not appear in the Control Center’s Log tab.)
3
Read the lines — every line is timestamped and tagged with a category.
4
Turn it off when done — Debug Mode prints on every bar, which slows long backtests.

14Troubleshooting
| Symptom |
Likely cause |
Fix |
| Card always shows PAUSED |
A daily limit was hit, max losses / max trades reached, or the time filter is on outside its window. The red reason line names it. |
Read the reason line. Limits reset at the next session. Check Daily Target/Stop are sized correctly (0 = disabled). |
| Card shows LOCKED |
The License Agreement hasn’t been accepted on this computer, or was declined. |
Disable → enable the strategy to reopen the Agreement, scroll to the end, tick and Accept. |
| Card shows WARMUP for a long time |
Not enough history loaded. |
Load at least 3–5 days on the chart. |
| Arrows appear but no orders |
Enable Trades is off (card shows SIGNALS ONLY), or a gate is blocking entries. |
Turn on Enable Trades (sim first); check the status reason. |
| Few or no signals |
Alternate Directions is waiting for the opposite direction, or filters are strict. |
Turn on Debug Mode and read the SETUP lines; consider Alternate Directions off on a sim account. |
| Strategy name shows yellow in the Strategies tab |
Start behavior Wait until flat: the historical replay ended in a position. |
Normal — it begins trading once that virtual position closes. |
| Settings are greyed out |
The strategy is enabled. |
Disable it, change settings, enable again. |
| A setting from this guide is missing |
An older build is still loaded (often because a later import or compile failed). |
Remove the strategy, re-import, restart NinjaTrader, add it again and check the version on the card. |
| Backtest shows zero trades |
Strategy locked (Agreement not accepted), Enable Trades off, or not enough data for warmup. |
Accept the Agreement, enable trades, extend the date range. |
15Tips & Best Practices
-
Sim first, always. Every new instrument, chart type or settings change deserves time on a simulation account first.
-
Size your limits to your contract. Daily Stop, Max Daily Trades and Max Consecutive Losses work as a set — see the sizing table above.
-
Change one thing at a time. Breakeven, trailing and the two signal filters all change results; test them separately so you know what helped.
-
Supervise live trading. Know how to flatten positions and cancel orders manually in NinjaTrader and with your broker, and check positions after any disconnect, restart or rollover.
-
Check prop-firm rules. Many evaluation and funded-account firms restrict or prohibit automated strategies, news trading or certain behaviours. Confirm your firm’s policy on third-party automated NinjaScript before running it there.
-
Keep Debug Mode for diagnosis. Turn it on to investigate, off for everyday use.
16Frequently Asked Questions
Does it work on any instrument?
It runs on any NinjaTrader 8 futures chart. Because stops and targets are in ticks, the dollar risk differs hugely between instruments — always re-size your limits.
Can I move the stop or target manually?
Yes. A manually moved profit target is preserved when the strategy later moves the stop for breakeven or trailing.
Why did it stop trading for the rest of the day?
A daily gate tripped — most often Max Consecutive Losses or Daily Stop PnL. The card’s red reason line tells you which. Gates reset at the next session.
Does a restart reset the daily limits?
Yes. When the strategy goes live it resets its daily counters, because trades from the historical replay were simulated and never reached your account.
Will it trade outside regular hours?
Yes, unless you enable the Session Time Filter. The filter supports overnight windows (start later than end).
Can I run it on more than one chart?
Yes, but each instance enforces its own daily limits independently. Make sure the combined risk across instances fits your account.
Why are there no messages in the Output window?
With Debug Mode off the strategy is intentionally silent except for errors. Turn on Debug Mode for full logs.
